New children’s hospital comes to life in Queensland

More than 1600 nurses and allied health professionals will be employed at Queensland’s new $1.5 billion children’s hospital when it opens its doors to the state’s littlest patients later next year.

The Queensland Children’s Hospital (QCH), which will combine the services of the Royal Children’s Hospital and Mater Children’s Hospital under one roof, is taking shape on land in South Brisbane next to the Mater Hospital. Read more…

Christchurch hospitals to begin rebuilding within months

Construction of a new facility for older people’s health will spearhead the epic redevelopment at New Zealand’s Burwood and Christchurch hospitals.

In the wake of the devastating earthquakes in 2010 and 2011, the largest hospital build in the history of the country’s public health service, which comes with a price tag of more than $600 million, has been given the green light with site clearing at Burwood Hospital to begin in the next few months. Queensland’s nursing casualty list escalates

The axe continues to fall in Queensland amid figures showing at least 700 public sector nursing and midwifery positions have been cut and more than 3400 positions culled at Queensland Health.

The Queensland Nurses’ Union has released its latest ‘cuts list’ which shows the State Government has axed 705 full-time equivalent (FTE) nursing and midwifery positions and 3477 FTE jobs at the health department. Read more…

Nurses allied health professionals fall prey to NSW budget cuts

The NSW Nurses Association general secretary is questioning promises made by NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner, that the jobs of nurses’ jobs will be protected during New South Wales current health sector cuts.

While insisting nurses’ jobs be protected, the minister has given responsibility for $775 million in cuts over 4 years to NSW Local Health Districts, Brett Holmes said. $89 million dollars is expected to be shaved off the budget for NSW hospitals this year.

NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association apologises for forced adoptions

An apology has been issues by the NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association (NSWNMA) to the mothers, fathers, daughters and sons subjected to forced adopted from the 1950′s and 1970′s.

The apology comes after state parliament passed an historic motion of apology in front of a packed gallery for the traumatising forced adoption policy.

Parliament heard that under the policy, approximately 150,000 babies were forcibly taken from their mothers during the period, which was then sanctioned by churches, charities, governments and hospitals. Read more…

Queensland budget “catastrophic” for nursing and allied health sectors

The Queensland Nurses Union (QNU) secretary has described the governments budget as “catastrophic” for the states health sector.

Morale among nurses and allied health professionals has been destroyed by the cuts announced earlier in September, says QNU secretary Beth Mohle.

The future of works also remains uncertain, amid mixed message over the extend of budget and job cuts. The QLD government budget announcement confirmed over 4,100 QLD Health employees would be paid redundancies, however this is not in keeping with a pre-announced figure of 2,754 jobs state-wide, which was revealed last week. Nurses breaching professional standards caught through Facebook

From the nurse who posed for a photo with a placenta, to the nurses having a food fight in the hospital, there are several cases of nurses facing disciplinary action for their inappropriate use of social networking sites such as Facebook.

Nurses fit the social media profile pretty well, with statistics showing 85% of females aged 18 to 50 participate in social media activities. This group is also the nursing profession’s main demographic. Read more…

Cuts to workers compensation rallies nurses

NSW nurses are being warned they may suffer cuts to benefits and lose essential workers compensation rights, under State Government planned changes to the Workers Compensation Scheme.
